Korean Dentist Extracts Volvo Masters Amateur World Title
Korean club golfer Choul Hee-lee is sitting on top of the world tonight after being crowned Volvo Masters Amateur champion of the world after surviving a torrid day at Finca Cortesín, venue for Ross Fisher’s Volvo World Match Play Championship victory on Sunday.
The 48-year-old Korean dentist had sailed into a seemingly unassailable lead following Monday’s opening round at La Quinta, scoring 41 points, but he was reeled back into the field at Finca Cortesín.
The father of three signed for 22 points, taking his aggregate total to 63 for a three-point margin of victory over René Hawkins from the UK and Christoph Essmeister from Austria who tied on60 points..
“I am very proud to win the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final,” said the newly-crowned champion, adding, “It is a great honour for me and my family, for Volvo Cars Korea and for my country.
“I would also like to congratulate all the other players who have pushed me all the way and for being not only tough competitors but also such good friends and fellow golfers,” he concluded.
Last year, the leading lady, Maria Paz Toranzo Aldunate took the title overall; one-year-later, Great Dane Jytte Lehnrmann, playing off 18 was the highest ranked of the record-equalling seven ladies in the world final field, 60 points earning her a highly-creditable fourth place.
Meanwhile, in the team competition it was the ‘SAS team’ of Spain and Switzerland who took top honours, Isabel Segoviano Llanos (17) and Thomas Schurter from Switzerland adding a fine 28 points at Finca Cortesín to the 27 they carded at La Quinta to take the title by four points from the Anglo-Japanese pairing of Mandy Larner (UK) and Masayoshi Nakagawa (Japan).
“Absolutely thrilled,” said Isabel, adding, “To win anything with the world ‘world’ in it in your own country is fantastic, and I would like to pay tribute to Thomas.
Meanwhile, her playing partner Thomas Schurter said, “Amazing, I am so pleased and to win it with such a fine team mate as Isabel makes it extra special.”
Commenting on the 2009 Volvo Masters Amateur World Final, Per Ericsson, President & CEO, Volvo Event Management said, “Everyone here this week is a winner, but we have several what I would call ‘champion winners’ and the congratulations of everyone at Volvo go out to them all.”
He added, “This year’s Volvo Masters Amateur around the world has typified everything Volvo in Golf stands for and the manner in which this World Final has been player on the golf course and enjoyed to the full off it has been very, very special indeed.”
