Game On

The stage is set, the time for talking is over as the 48 men and women who have battled their way through local, regional and national qualifiers head for Spain and the experience of a lifetime, the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final in Spain.

Almost 50,000 golfers from 15 different countries set out on the long and demanding path that makes the professional’s qualification for the Volvo World Match Play Championship look like a stroll in the park.

Local qualifiers, regional championships and national finals, around 200,000 rounds of golf have been played, almost 20 million shots struck and now the two days of reckoning are here.

Golfers, including a record eight ladies land in Spain for the sporting experience of a lifetime, on and off the golf course.

Based at the splendid Westin la Quinta, where the opening round of the world final will be held, this year’s finalists will enjoy VIP treatment at the inaugural Volvo World Match Play Championship and catch-up with the two Ryder Cup captains, Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin.

Then the hard work begins; following Monday’s opening round at La Quinta, the stars of the amateur game head to Finca Cortesín for Tuesday’s second, final and deciding round of golf, following in the footsteps of the stars with the 6,800m, Par-72 golf course in identical condition to when the Volvo World Match Play Championship was won and lost just hours earlier.

“Our amateur golfers are the backbone of the game of golf, and I congratulate not only those who have qualified for the World Final,” but also all those who did not quite make it,” says Sofie Van Reusel, the Volvo Masters Amateur project manager, adding, “On and off the golf course, our aim is to give our amateurs a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with one of them being crowned champion of the world.”

The first round of the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final takes place at La Quinta on Monday 2nd November 2009 with the second and final round played over Finca Cortesín, complete with the Volvo World Match Play Championship tees and pin positions on Tuesday 3rd November 2009.
